The cave

The three caves
The mossed rock mouth of Nalubaale Cave seen from the water
Ssese Islands, Lake Victoria, Uganda

This ground is where the Lubaale of Ssese can be approached, and where the teaching is lived.

Hear her

“I listen to the wave upon the shore, the breath within your chest, and the stories carried in the roots of this land. Welcome home to yourself.”

Queen Nalubaale

Sanctuary Moments

Small scenes from the land, the craft, and the table.

The land

The Land.

Tropical forest against grassland. A spring runs in the roots of an ancient tree. Goats wander free, and the lake gives up its fish. An ancient tortoise named Mutaka rests on the stony shore most afternoons. More than a hundred caves lie under this island — three of them open to guests.

Who Is Welcomed

Solo Journey

Solitude Lovers

Silence, fire, stone, & lake

People ready to sit with themselves in deep silence, beside the fire and the stones, where they can be lifted off a weight and grounded back to their roots.

Solo Journey

Seekers of Healing & Enrichment

Shed, let go, start fresh

People who are stressed, tired, lost, or hungry for self-knowing. There is a need to shed, let go, and make a major decision. If this is you, send the application.

Shared Hearth

Couples & Partnerships

Arbitration, blessing, & shared craft

Partners seeking a lasting relationship, arbitration, blessing, and a shared craft beside the fire. Work done together, to keep the two of you together.

Shared Hearth

Families & Lineage

Living culture, reunion, a fresh start

Households introducing children to living culture, the land, the herd, the fire, the forest, and ancestral craft. Families seeking reunion, arbitration, youth rehabilitation, and a fresh start.

Collective

Spiritual Circles & Retreats

A family, not a performance

When people of the same frequency meet, they become more than friends. A spiritual family, with no lies and no hypocrisy. Such a family can visit this ground together.

Collective

Team Building

Shared labor, fire, & clarity

Teams who come to work with their hands on the land, sit by the fire, and leave with a clearer mind than they arrived with.

Collective

Ekyoto Kya Ba Kyaala

Annual gathering of women

Women carry the house, the work, and everyone else, and often forget themselves. This gathering is for rest, womb care, shared talk, and the girly deeds that no one else makes time for. Menopause is spoken of here. Someone is listening.

This is not a party island, a drop-in lodge, or a clinical facility. Sessions are traditional, energetic, and artisanal; they complement and do not replace medical or psychiatric care.

Three Acts of an Immersion

Wooden canoe crossing the waters of Lake Victoria to the sanctuary
Act I: Arrival & Stepping In

Arrival & Stepping In

Crossing the water & setting down the burden

The crossing begins from Entebbe over the vast expanse of Lake Victoria toward the quiet waters of the Ssese archipelago.

Step off the wooden boat onto warm red earth. The first evening asks nothing of you except stillness. Let the gentle roll of the lake waves replace the noise of your phone and city rhythms.

Living Sanctuary Rhythms

  • Foot washing in lake water
  • Digital sunset — phones placed into cedar box
  • Evening lake fish broth & herbal infusion
  • First night sleep beneath the island stars

“You arrive not as a customer, but as someone coming home to their roots.”

The atelier

Craft as Healing.

As the fingers work banana fibre, palm leaf, and bark cloth beside the fire, intention leaves the mouth and enters the object that goes home.

You do not only speak the intention. You weave it, sew it, and carry it home.

Mama Nalubaale

Queen Nalubaale

I work with breath, bark, cowrie, root water, and the fire that has burned on this shore longer than any of us can remember. This sanctuary is not a business I started — it is a place I was given.

Sacred Geography

The Ssese Islands hold more than this sanctuary. Neighbouring sacred sites form a wider pilgrimage landscape across the lake.

Wanema's Shrine

Bubeke Island

A sacred shrine on a neighbouring island, reached by boat. Pilgrimage context, not included in sanctuary stays.

Nanziri Waterfalls & Caves

Bukasa Island

Waterfalls and cave systems on a nearby island. Regional sacred geography, not on the sanctuary grounds.

Buswa Forest & Damula Source

Regional

Forest and ancestral water source. Part of the wider sacred landscape of the Ssese Islands.
